Default restoring bumper molding?

Hi everyone! Long time reader first time posting. I'm in proscess of repainting my 85 and had to drill out many of the bumper moldings. I was wondering if anyone has tried to remove the entire stud and replace it with a new bolt? If this could be done it would save alot of time and money locating discontinued pices.

Welcome to the forum! I know the molding drill....they rust and seize on there and its a problem with early C4's.I was lucky enough to buy a new set of moldings a few years back and still have them in the wrapper. You will need to use anti-seize on the nuts to prevent seizure...about your question,I think the inside studs are part of a long thin metal piece inside the molding that held down by phillip screws. If you can get this long metal piece out intact, you may be able to install your own studs after taking the old ones out.
But I never heard of anyone doing this fix.The nuts on mine were so rusted I had to dremel tool them off and destroyed the molding, making me go out and buy new ones.
:)

I am going through this right now. Like someone else said those studs are permanently affixed to the metal strip. I have not seen anyone who sells just the metal strip but i was able to get new ones some from Ecklers and some from MAD good luck.

You might be able to carefully weld the stud back to the trim. Or you could even run sheetmetal screws back into the hole from behind while you have the bumpers off. Not the best way but you couldn't tell and it beats buyin new. I think i got the last set of beltline moldings from a chevy dealer like 4 yrs ago. Looked awsome, someone has a nice set on a red 84 out there.
