Now ask me if I blew a 3 speed in my 57 Chevy. The clutch blew and the flywheel came apart and broke the front of the tranny off. I was deaf for a couple of days and lucky as could be that the flywheel blew down.
Had a ZF-6 go out on me last year, apparently a stud was not properly tightened down, and it blew apart my transmission. Bent the clutch pedal and made a hell of a racket when it grenaded. 11 months and 9,000 miles later, it feels like its about to do it again.....
Haven't broke any of my vettes yet, but I've blown up about four trannies in various UPS trucks, two in my old Volare, two in my Coronet, one in my pick up truck.

Re: Ever break a tranny? (Nathan Plemons)
Does having a fluid leak count? I've had the seals between the rear extension housing and the middle of the case replaced on my ZF due to some light seepage of oil. Now, around two years later it looks like I have a slight leak or seepage problem.
Aside from that so far so good (touch wood), give me time and I know something will go, I just really hope it isn't too spectacular when it does happen.
had my 700r4 go out while merging into intersate traffic(actually I think it was just the converter). I rebuilt my own successfully(yes I am very prideful :D )....high performance with a shift kit. It has 1500 miles on it so far and still strong..........waiting...........waitin g........
:steering: Back in the 70s, the Muncie 4-speed in my '68 SS Chevelle blew at about 70MPH. Went BANG, and locked up my rear wheels. I thought I was going to tag the guard-rail, or get rear-ended, but I didn't. That was on I-75, just north of Lexington. My Dad lived in Richmond, so I called him, and said to rent a tow-bar, and come get me. I guess that Muncie had a few thousand power-shifts on it by then, behind a stout big-block, so I really couldn't complain.
Have not had the vette long enugh to burn up the trans.
But I did eat up about 3 200-4R tran's in my 77 impala with a 350. Nothing special but I kept eating up second gear. Could still drive but it made my car slow after first :( Best time replacing the trans was 3 hours drive it in and drive it out :). Put in a Turbo 400 and I don;t like the first gear.
Wonder if you can put a small 1st gear in a 700-R4 like the 200-4R's have

Re: Ever break a tranny? (BookSmart)
I was going through 1 (one) 700R4 a summer after a while.
After 7 (seven) 700r4 rebuilds I had a Turbo-400 built for me that will hold 1000 HP or more.
I pound this baby with 550 ft lbs torque at the wheels.!
Some of those 700's "Blowed up real good".
Two autos in two months. Original died at 98K, bought a factory GM rebuilt that died after only 6 weeks. Warranty rebuilt again with no worries to date (50K+).. It apparently didn't have all the latest TSB's installed the first time. Now it does.
