TAKEING MY 89 TOMORROW FOR EXHAUST MODIFICATIONS, PLANNING ON REMOVEING CAT. CONVERTOR. MY QUESTION IS IF I REMOVE RESONATORS JUST PAST OXYGEN SENSORS WILL IT CAUSE ME ANY CODE PROBLEMS? DO I HAVE TO KEEP O2 SENSORS? IF SO THEN THE FRONT EXHAUST CUSTOM Y PIPE SOLD BYE T.P.I.S. WOULD THROW A CODE. I AM WANTING THE BEST EXHAUST FLOW POSSIBLE USEING STOCK MANIFOLDS WITHOUT GETTING A CODE LIGHT. ANY HELP OR SUGGESTIONS FROM PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE WILL BE APPRETIATED.
There are 3 cats on the '89. Some people replace the 2 pre-cats in the stock Y with a bigger diameter Y without pre-cats. You should run a new high flow 3-way cat converter if you replace the pre-cats. You need to keep the O2 sensor. Your exhaust shop will be able to weld in a new bung for it. Removing the cats will not throw a code. You may want to consider a 2.5" dual exhaust with crossover pipe if you're going to ditch the cats.
BTW, I think you're caps lock is stuck ;)
(writing posts in all caps makes it difficult to read and comes across as shouting)
You MUST keep the Oxygen sensor, its the most important sensor next to the MAF in the car.
It has happened sometimes that you can throw a code for the oxygen sensor not reading the right amount of heat in the exhaust, its unlikely that you will though.
The best exhaust possible would be 1.75" longtube headers and a good catback, all catbacks give the approx the same power gains, so choose on sound preference.
