Default steering column question

On my `84, the steering column (well, maybe it's a connecting rod or something. it connects the rack to the steering wheel butt. in the fire wall- has a u-joint on either end) it has a rubber grommet on it that is deteriorating. I was told this is apart of the safety features, in that in a wreck this portion of the rod will collapse. What does that rubber grommet do? Insulation? Is the steering connecting rod (whatever) two peices or what?

It's being somewhat erratic at high speeds, so I figure it's either this or ball joints.

Are you talking about the rag joint? That is there to absorb shock when turning to lock. But it is part of front suspension and should be fixed if deteriorating. It wouldnt pass a safety inspection if rotting. If its acting strange at hi-speed You should check ball joints, rack bushings and wheel balance. If you read the post "Steering wheel shake" I was given some good tips beyond these. It might help your problem too. :smash:

The shaft you are talking about collapses in a crash so the steering wheel isn't push into your chest. That rubber piece wear with age and you will get play in the steering. This piece is unique to 84 and 85 and GM doesn't make it anymore. You'll have to call some Corvette salvage yards. It goes for $100-200 depending on who you call.
