Hello.
I never found any company that had a single mass flywheel already balanced to our L98's. How would they know how to balance it? Here is what I did:

I took my DM to a machine shop with balancing capabilities and had them match the same amount of weight in the same location as the DM onto a camaro FW. The motor felt balanced after that, but recently that motor broke. So be careful.

do you mean, that your motor broke ???

do you think, its related to the single mass, or just a bad timing???

Well a piston broke and my main bearings looked really bad. I am pretty sure it was not my single mass but I just want to make sure you know what happen to me. Lots of forum members using single mass. I don't know how they balanced their SM FW to their L98. I hope some of those guys post here so I can know too.

uh..that sounds bad  but...i dont think too, that this is related to the FW. because i think wrong balanced FW destroyes the crank...

ok, hopefully somebody will chime in..

thanks

Spec clutches sells what they claim is a balanced sigle mass aluminumm flywheel. I put one in my 91 coupe a couple of months ago. I have NO complaints whatsoever. Price was decent, customer service was great. Drop me an e-mail at ludachriss2@yahoo.com if you can't locate them on the web. I have the paperwork somewhere. Good luck :seeya

Broken piston, destroyed main bearings....Sounds like a bad case of prolonged detonation to me.

Doug Rippie sells single masses for L98 too but as far as I know they are f-body flywheels machined down a touch. If I did a single mass conversion again I would go for an aluminium fw next time with a replaceable friction surface.

Whether you like the conversion or not depends on what you like in a car. You have to slip the clutch a bit more when taking off ordinarily but it's no biggie. As far as whether a single mass helps or hurts acceleration, I won't get into that debate. :)

If you do a search in the C4 tech archives you should find a bunch of stuff if you search under "single mass".

If you've got a motor that doesn't turn real high or make in excess of 450 hp or so you can take the cheap route out... Go to GM and buy a flywheel for a 86-88 Corvette; it's a 153 tooth L98 piece, single mass for the 4+3 DNE trannys. Then go to RAM clutches and tell them you need a single mass clutch disk for your year Vette (the main diff is the disk's hub if I recall correctly). You can then either use your factory pressure plate (if it's in good shape) or buy a new one. Oh, you will also need a longer clutch fork pivot stud...That's it...Pretty simple.
