I am in the final stages of building my TPI motor for my 80 Vette (should have it in tomorrow). I was test fitting the intake (scoggin-dickey vortec base) and there is a HUGE vertical gap in between the front and rear of the intake and the china rails of the block. I am used to using silicone for that area, but this is rediculous. I called Scoggin-Dickey and they said black RTV is what came from the factory. I went to the local dealership and they said that there was no part for the year (96 Vortec truck). Does anyone have any experience with this, am I just crazy.
Im nowhere near being a guru but how big is the gap? Are you saying when you place the manifold on the heads, the end rails have a too large a gap that it seems like RTV or something wouldnt be enough to seal it the manifold to the block?
Im just interested in knowing more.I just did an intake gasket job on a 3.8 engine and it has a big gap at the end rails to the intake BUT the intake gasket kit came with 2 rubber end rails gaskets that lock with the side intake gaskets and with some RTV it seals perfect.Wasnt sure if this was supposed to be what the vortec heads and end rails on a block needs to fully seal.
If you have never seen the gaskets for a Vortec manifold, they are about an almost a 1/4" thick (not really sure the exact thickness) and that is the thickness of the gap in between the front of the block.
