My antenna on 86 is stuck up. Questions 1. Does it "power down" or spring return down. If power down, must be a down source of power? 2. How hard is it to remove? 3. What has to be taken off first? 4. Any special tools needed? 5. Is there something I should do before buying a new one and ripping out old? :auto:
Step 1 to manually test to see if it retracts:
a. Locate the Antenna connector (Should be near antenna)
b. Ground the Green wire
c. Apply +12v to the White wire. The currect draw between the +12V source and the White wire should be between 0-30 AMP (according to my service manual).
If Antenna is Inop or draws excessive current, replace or repair the antenna.
Let me know if you need me to type in Step 2 to test the car wiring connector. BTW, there are 4 total steps to diagnosis an inop antenna.
You can remove the trim at the back of the hatch, behind it is the relay. You can test the relay to see if power is getting there to energize the coil. If so check to see if points are re-directing power to antenna.
If you don't hear the motor running when you turn the radio on or off then check the connections and the relay in the back hatch. If you hear the motor then you have a broken mast. If you have long thin arms you can reach the bezel from underneath the car. If not just remove the L rear wheel and fender well to access it. Once removed open the motor and get out all the broken plastic pieces and your new one will just hook in and then reverse steps.
