If you are going to buy it and just leave it stock, get the LT1.
If you want to play around and mod it, get the 91 L98, which in my biased opinion is the best value, and best option out there. I got mine for $9k, and all SBC parts work, and are easy to work on, plus I can do my own tune-ups (unlike those horrible Opti-crap LT1's). Think of a 91 as a LT1 body with the best L98 engine, and a good price tag.
Like I said though, if you are not the tinkering type, and just drive it, and have a good mechanic, then buy the LT1, it will be faster out of the box, have a few more creature comforts, but KEEP IT AWAY FROM WATER!!!!
what about the LT5 Corvettes? Does that not come into the equation or is it an exception?
The LT5 just does not do it for me personally (except for a cetain friends CR-1). I am into modifying my car as it is more of a hobby car for me and the LT5 is just too hard to find decent upgrade parts for reasonable amounts of money. It is all what you are looking for though.
I think the Optispark problems are blown WAY out of proportion. It just seems like it is a chronic problem because you only hear from the people whose Opti has crapped out. I think that the percentage of people who have problems with them is relatively small compared to those who don't. The real danger is the water pump failing and dousing the Opti with coolant. As far as stuff like spraying the front of the engine with a high pressure hose, or driving through three feet of standing water, come on, that's just common sense for ANY vehicle.
So I guess what I'm saying is don't let the fact that the LT1 has the Optispark be the only reason you shy away from an LT1 car. That's my opinion at least.

How could a LT5 not "do it" for someone. Have you been in one at 7,000 rpm in 3rd shifting to 4th and basically being rocketed past 150mph like it was nothing? The sound is incrediable, let along the feel. I must be easy, because that "does it" for me and leaves me shaking from the thrill every time I try it.
Now modding can be expensive on the LT5. Upgrade parts? Port/polish the top end, add headers, exhaust and some tuning and you are at 400rwhp. Plently of car there too, don't let the "lowly" 400rwhp fool ya. Granted, if you want to do some real upgrades (aka, the 368+) you are looking at the retail of another nice late model C4 and then some.
I LOVE my 86. Then again it is my first vette. And the only vette I have been in. There is nothing I could ask my car to do but maybe go faster. It does everything above and beyond my expectations.
Best advise I have read is drive a few. And decide what you like. I like the looks of the older C-4's better than the newer ones and the C-5's. You can always go faster if you put more money into your car. And if you get something older you will probally have money left over to put into your car.
GL with the search. I am shure you will love the car. I mean ever my wife loves my vette and we drive it over her 2002 turbo beetle all the time. It is actually more comfortable. Except her's has heated seats.
As mentioned before I would go with the LT-1. In the real world, you most likely are not going to meet a stock vette so the real issue is what is the best way to get to a 11 second street car on street tires within your budget.
I've had both aswell, and to me, I like the L98 better myself...although, on the freeway that LT1 will pick up from a 65mph roll REAL quick. But it's all in what does it for you honestly, I almost bought a 2nd LT1, but then I decided that the LT1 didn't do it for me, so I went back to an L98. :D
Whats the real difference between the Regular C4's and the ZR-1's? JUst that it has the LT5, wider rear, fatter tires, and maybe a couple extras, but its more geared towards a High speed car then an all out acceleration car, right? IS it built to be more stable at higher speeds?
