Has anyone raced a 1991 vette against a 1992???
Is there really a big difference in the quarter mile/stoplight showdown??????
Ive been looking for a 92 but have only found some 91s so far. :flag
The '92 comes with 55 chp more stock so expect the '92 to take the win stripe in the 1/4mi, though the '91 will likely get to the 1/4 mile marker first.
Essentially a '91 Vette is a very low 14sec to very high 13sec car whereas a limilarly equipped '92 is a mid 13sec car.
Don't reject the '91 based on the HP numbers alone; compare the entire car with a '92 to make your choice. If you find a clean '91 with the options you need remember that it is the most evolved of the L98 powered Vettes.
If you are handy with tools and like to wrench on your ride you can, with a little effort, coax nearly 300hp out of the '91 and you will take the win stripe every time. The L98 has the potential to run low 12s in modified TPI dress and still be very streetable (check out the L98 mods results page on my site).
Anyway, good luck in your search and enjoy your choice.
I'm rather biased here since I own a 90 L98 but I'd say buy the '91... Stock from stoplight to stoplight most well tuned L98's will walk an LT1...1/4 mile is another story, the long runner manifold doesn't allow the topend power that the short runner LT1 does. The LT1 wins in a longer race than just a block or two...But, since the '91 uses a traditional SBC block you can do WHATEVER you want (read mega displacement)... Just my $.02

I would buy an L98 over an L83...
...an LT1 over an L98...
...an LT4 over an LT1...only if it were staying stock!
...an LS1 over an LT1/4...
...an LS6 over an LS1.
Each one is better than the prior IMO. I personally prefer the LT1 because it is what I know and love (well, at least this week).
The right rear gear on the LT1 and the L98 will have a tough time even in stoplight races.
The LT1 has a much wider torque band, which means more power more often. I would say drive both and see which you prefer.
:iagree: You can put 4.10 gears in an LT1 and still have a very streetable car that will rip an L98 out of the hole. Granted if you put those same gears in the L98 you will again be ahead of the LT1 but it's still gonna run out of breath sooner.
Although the top speed of 155 vs 165 doesn't seem like tha much, consider what that means. To double your top speed it take 4 times the horsepower. Although that 10 mph doesn't seem like much but in reality it represents a significant increase in horsepower.
Anytime you start saying "add this", or "add that" and it makes them more equal always makes me laugh. You can always make either one of them faster than another with the right parts selection and an open wallet. Heck while you are at it, a 100 shot of Nitrous on an L98 will make it fly away from a stock LT1. Yeah, but put a Procharger on that LT1 and it will walk away from the 100 shot of Nitrous. LOL.
Best thing to do it to drive each and pick the one you feel more comfortable in. I personally find the seats and interior much more pleasing in the '94-96 C4 than in the '91-93. Best peice of advise I can give is to not settle for something that is any less than what you really want. (assuming your goals are reasonable)
I picked a 92 specifically because of the LT1. It's about value. If you find a cherry 91 with everything you want for $5000 then go for it. If the pricing is equal, I would pick the LT1.

what about the LT5 Corvettes? Does that not come into the equation or is it an exception?
I would suggest doing a search on your own topics posted over the past 89 days
I believe that many of them have been L-98 vs LT-1 type posts, and that the rest of them have been "wanted to buy" posts.
After 3 months of searching for the perfect car, I would suggest that you do what a lot of us do. ...... keep shopping until you find a car that "does it for you" :D
then check it out, as you would any other purchase.... and buy it.
if you are looking for performance, I would consider cars in this order...
($23,000 or less)
ZR-1
LT-4
LT-1
L-98
Otherwise, just buy one that you like and enjoy :D
The right rear gear on the LT1 and the L98 will have a tough time even in stoplight races.
While thats fine and dandy you have just changed a key variable. Put the same gear on an L98 and things will be back to normal for a stoplight race. :)
