Why?? For as long as I've had my car, and driven it the whopping 200 miles I've put on, the AVERAGE MPG has never changed... Is this something I need to reset occasionally?? I'd figure, it should be going up & down depending on driving habits, but it doesn't ever move.. Help!
The average MPG will continue to calculate the average for as long as you want before you reset it.
So if you've never reset it this doesn't suprise me at all. For instance if you drive 300 miles getting 15 mpg, that one mile at 1 mpg doesn't do much to affect the overall average.
No, I've never reset mine. To be honest with you, I should have done it when I first bought the car!! Is it as easy as holding in that RESET button when the MPG is displayed?? Thanks.

You are correct. It really is that easy. Just push the fuel reset button. I do it after a fill up.
The only reason I stay with early C4's is the extremely accurate, readable and informational digital dash. An analog gauge that has a needle between two ambiguous and far apart numbers does nothing for me. Don't turn anything off. More information makes you a better C4 owner.
Re: Average MPG never changes?? (_freakmonkeydogboy_)
Yup I reset mine every time I get gas. I love the info. I am a number freak. Got 400 miles out of my last tank of gas and had 30 miles till empty. Car starts to run out of fuel when you get on it that low. 27-28 MGP on the freeway 16-17 in the city 25 on average for my trip.
Insta fuel MPG and average up on the dash is the best. Makes me feel like I drive a really high end car because most cars don't have that stuff. I love my car. :yesnod:

Some people would argue that it's easier to glance at an analog gauge and know everything is normal. That's why I love my 92 so much, it has BOTH the analog gauges and digital. I can glance and see if everything is alright yet if I need to pay closer attention to something I can choose to do so.
The tach would be a good example, who has never confused a 3 for an 8 on an digital LED display, 5300 could look at a lot like 5800 or vice versa. An analog gauge you can see out of the corner of your eye, a digital gauge that displays numbers you actually have to focus on and read.
To each their own but I prefer analog gauges. For instance my fuel pressure gauge, I can see it moving out of the corner of my eye and see what direction it's moving. If it was digital I would be able to see it was changing but would have to focus on it to see if it was going up or down.
Like others have said, if that thing has been reading an average for 40k miles I'll be surprised if you EVER see it change. :D I reset mine often to see how I do on trips.
Also if someone had a scanner connected to the car at some time and decided to perminately fix a 10k resistor between the A&B terminals on the diagnostic port, your ave mileage will remain the same.
Check for a short between those two terminals.
