Does anybody have pictures or instructions on how to change the tranny fluid in a C4 Six Speed. I know this topic has been posted many times before but my search feature does not want to cooperate.
It's pretty much remove both the bottom and side plugs and let it drain. Put the bottom plug in and use a hand pump ($10-$15 Advance Auto parts). Test the pump to see which end is exit and stick that end in the side plug of the tranny. Stick the other end in the bottle and pump fluid in until it starts coming out the side. You can't overfill it.
The plugs are a PITA to get out. If you can get a 17mm socket with the allen wrench style fitting it might be easier. I used the 17mm allen wrench with a socket and long extension over it to get leverage. The plugs are soft so be careful, you can chew them up fairly easy...

Re: Changing the Tranny Fluid (KCvetteowner)
I'll add a couple more thoughts:
1. ALWAYS REMOVE THE FILL PLUG FIRST!! You don't want a drained tranny with no means of adding fluid.
2. Instead of a pump, you can thread a 3-foot section of 3/8th inch hose (or 1/2") down the firewall on the passenger side. Poke the bottom end into the ZF fill plug hole and duct tape a funnel to the other end of the hose. Pour 2 and 1/4 quarts of Castrol - just enough to get a small amount of overflow out of the fill hole.
I would leave the plug out after it is drained ,pour about 1-4 of a quart in and let it drain --to get any of metal shavings that may be laying on the bottom before i put the plug back.then fill it up .after all one of the main reason to change the fluid is the metal shaving so do it while you have the chance.that is how i do it. not a bad job :chevy :auto:
