Sounds like a VATS problem, I've seen it happen on others. The car won't start, there is some kind of reset procedure where you have to wait and then thecar will start.
Hopefully someone can fill inmore on this procedure, butthat's what it sounds like to me.
On other cars I've owned, the neutral safety switch was bad and jiggling the shifter like Jim mentioned will be a temporary fix. Enough to get you home anyway.

Haven't had the problem myself, but I believe
I read that using something (isopropyl alcohol?)
helps restore conductivity through the contacts
in the ign switch and the resistor pellet.
I suppose a pencil eraser might do the job, too.
You DO have spare keys you can try, also, right?

about 'No Start - VATS' and describes conditions
for the different generations of VATS in C4's. Buy
his publications - in the meantime check out the
key, the lock cylinder or consider a VATS bypass
resistor.
