Default Dead 88?

Car ran great for about a month, shut it off at the store a few blocks from home, get back in the car and the starter does nothing. Battery is OK, any real simple things to look at first? terminals are tight, lights, windows etc. work good. I'm thinking a starter or computer. Any thoughts?

Thanks.

I'm starting to think battery, had to have brought home on a flat bed last night and what do you know? it starts this morning. Perhaps the volt gage is not reading correctly? what are your cars indicating consistently on the gages?

Thanks.

My volt meter reads anywhere from 12.7-14.3 while running.

Sounds like a VATS problem, I've seen it happen on others. The car won't start, there is some kind of reset procedure where you have to wait and then thecar will start.

Hopefully someone can fill inmore on this procedure, butthat's what it sounds like to me.

On other cars I've owned, the neutral safety switch was bad and jiggling the shifter like Jim mentioned will be a temporary fix. Enough to get you home anyway.

Oops! found my own answer, Vehicle Anti Theft System. If you wait over 4 mins. will it start again? or is it better to by-pass this thing? or get new contacts ?

Thanks.

To eliminate the VATS from the picture you can install one of the VATS eliminator switches from MAD or Eckler's.

Doesn't cleaning the key help?

Haven't had the problem myself, but I believe
I read that using something (isopropyl alcohol?)
helps restore conductivity through the contacts
in the ign switch and the resistor pellet.

I suppose a pencil eraser might do the job, too.
You DO have spare keys you can try, also, right?

In "Top 50 Questions" Vol II Gordon Killebrew writes
about 'No Start - VATS' and describes conditions
for the different generations of VATS in C4's. Buy
his publications - in the meantime check out the
key, the lock cylinder or consider a VATS bypass
resistor.
