I have noticed that the tran chatters just before kick down in o.d. what would cause this ( trans has 111000 miles ) the fluid is not burn't and shifts good anybody knows?
Does it sound like it's coming from the INSIDE of the tranny? Roll your windows down and listen see if it's possible that is coming from the outside. There are numerous things(tranny lines, exhaust hanger, or catalytic tube) that could be rattling when the shift gets made. There really is nothing inside the tranny that I can think of that will rattle like that unless its the Parking Paw or you blew a bearing(unlikely). If one of the gears came apart...you would for sure know it...same for any of the clutches or plates.
just my $.02 forwhat it's worth.

It seems to be more of a engine shutter , but only just before kick down.
The chatter can be the differential backing-up under the pressure of the transmission. The car is rolling faster than the transmission is turning. The trans has stayed in overdrive, not de-locking. This resistance goes back to the differential, where normal play now becomes a chatter, eventually a judder and finally will start to shake the whole car and convince you that the sky is falling. REally, my 1984 was awful.
Finally, my mechanic learned how to burn a new chip for the part of the program that governs the transmission shift points for overdrive. What an improvement.
Now don't ask me to explain how its done. That why I mentioned my mechanic. But he learned of some of this stuff from the cross-fire web site. He has since learned how to program chips and is helping folks with performance cars meet emission tests.... and fixing my headaches.
Mine made a sound like I was going over rumble strips in the pavement. I asked on this board and most people thought it was torque converter chatter. I had the trans flushed completely and fluid replaced with valvoline durablend semi-synthetic and the sound went away.

That makes sense! I kind of suspect the torque converter be cause it happen just before the trans kick down.
