Have a problem with my father in laws 93 LT-1. Coolant hose busted....sprayed...and fixed. After....rough running and now wont start at all.
I dont know much about LT-1's, but I am pretty convinced its the Opti-Spark that has gotten wet. Acts just like a distributor that has gotten damp. I was under the impression that this was a factory re-call for the engineering stumble??? Is this true? What is the best way to remedy the situation. I can turn a wrench...but not fully sure of father in laws apptitude for this. You did not here that from me though!
Also....does the ASR (traction control) need servicing. He seems pretty sure it does....I am not so sure?
Any basic LT-1 upkeep info for a L-98 man is greatly appreciated!!!
The remedy for a failed opti is to replace it, which should include the water pump, also.
There are several Tech Tips on opti replacement. You might want to review the procedure to see if you want to undertake the job. My local shop estimates 3 1/2 hours labor plus opti and pump. You might also check the search feature for opti prices. A popular source is Superior Chev 1 800 728 8267 (tell them you are a forum member), and there are others that may be cheaper. Good luck.........
Busted water lines will almost always lead to a contaminated Optispark unit. Replace it to fix what ails you. I've done it on mine and it took a while. Will be doing it again once I get around to the cam/head swap. I will be converting over to the vented design then by changing the timing cover to a '95 model. Expect a big bill if a mech does the work. Do it yourself and save about $300-500 in labor. Just depends really.....I recommend the superior chevrolet lead for cheap prices and great service.
try this shortcut before breaking into the opti............get someone with shop air at 100 PSI and blast the opti to see if you can get it to clear. If water/antifreeze can get in, so can air. that may clear it out and save you a hell of a lot of grief
Thanks guys for the help and heads up on this. I have dealt with Superior Chevy and they are great. I now need to let my father in law know what is going on, and let him make his own decision on which way to proceed.
