Default Question about speed sensor....

I removed my instrument cluster in my 85 to send in, and have rebuilt. To make a long story short....drove the Vette to get gas today, and got a code 24, which is the speed sensor. Would the fact that my instrument cluster is out of the car cause the fault code? Also, when I re-install the cluster, will it take care of the code, or did I fry the speed sensor by driving the car with the instrument cluster out of it? Am I correct in assuming that the speed sensor controls the cruise control? Where is it located if I need to install a new one? This has me kind of worried, because I do like my cruise. Any info is greatly appreciated. Thank You in advance! :seeya

Default Re: Question about speed sensor.... (Klimper)

Rest easy. I think you're fine. The ECM is the what sets Trouble Codes. The Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) is located in the transmission. It's output goes to the cluster. The cluster then sends the speed info to the ECM. Since the cluster is out, the ECM will report a VSS fault. You should be fine after you re-install the cluster. Nothing will be fried. I wouldn't drive the car too much though, as the ECM uses vehicle speed for things like Torque Converter Lockup if you have an automatic or OD operation if 4+3 among others. The Cruise Control is built into the cluster and as I said, the VSS feeds the cluster.
