My son and I stopped by a "Wheel Shop" that had many aftermarket items one of which was a set of plastic projector style head lights. They were much lighter than the sealed glass beam lights and looked very  My thinking was that they might be easier on the bushings, gears and motor, while giving a neater light. I was also concerned about the plastic becoming worn quickly, but the "salesman" said there is a plastic polish that keeps them clear. Anybody ever use these? $55. a set.
There are two very popular replacement headlamps setups on the Forum. One is the Sylvania SilverStar replacement headlamps. Much better light and a brighter light than stock. The other is Hella lamp housings and APC Xenon bulbs. The Hella's are glass but they really aren't that much heavier than stock lamps. I've had them in my 92 for a couple years now and no problems at all with the motors or gears.
The SilverStar lamps are fairly inexpensive and can be found at most auto parts stores. The Hella lamps and APC bulbs are available from Summit Racing. The Hella's come with a halogen H4 bulb which is better than stock, but the APC Xenon bulb is a bright white and more powerful.
The APC bulbs have a blue coating but the light output is a bright white but not like HID lighting. I have SilverStar bulbs on my 99 Silverado and the light output is very similar to the APC bulbs but less wattage. In this pic, the inside (high beams) are APC bulbs and the outside (low beams) are Silverstars:
