I was finally able to locate some oil leaking useing an oil tracer and blacklight.
One place looks like it's on top of the intake manifold at the first bolt by the distribitor on the passenger side. So I'm thinking valve cover.
From underneigh, there's some oils coming down the side of the block by the dipstick. It runs along the border between the block and the head about 10 inches long running twards the front of the car.
I can't be sure because I can not see any oil come from above, but I'm thinking two different leaks. As you know it's tight and hard to get the light in and see at the same time.
Thanks for your responce Raysur. When your Brother replaced his valve cover gasket, did he put liquid gasket sealant on one or both sides?
Did he use a torque wench in inch/lbs or just guess?
I'm just curious. I just put new valve cover gaskets on with this rebuild.
You need to use a torque wrench for the valve cover gaskets it does not take much. Some gaskets you do not use silicone. Some people still do just to hold them in place.
Thanks. Indeed I'm going to find a torqure wrench for inch/lbs and replace both the gaskets and try it again...easy fix.
I found where the top leak is coming from. There's a small rubber tube that's fitted to a metal one coming from a heater hose. This is leaking on top of the intake manifold.
It's so small and covers where it's leaking on.
Get a set of FelPro Perma Dry gaskets from Auto Zone and install them dry. Just thoroughly clean the inside of the valve cover and the head before installing.
That small hose is only a steam escape passage so you can splice it if necessary.
Big K,
We haven't replace it yet since the car is apart for restoration. But I was planning on installing it dry. Soon it will be done and the car will get a paint job.

Re: Oil leak (Mach85)
Wasn't there a guy who posted something about a oil leak coming from the Starter? like behind it or something.
Oil can't leak from the starter. Oil leaks on that side tend to come from the valve cover gaskets, or the rear main seal, or maybe the back of the intake manifold or oil pan gasket. That's what I had at least.
Mach85, what have you done to make sure that the valve covers are the sourse of the leak? Is it alot?
It's funny that you mention oil leaking on the starter. I have oil there too.
65Z01, I havn't heard of intalling gaskets dry before. If anything, Ive heard to error on the side of more liquid gasket. Have you used these gaskets before? Is there anything else that I need to do other than make sure it's clean like check to see if it's bent with a streight edge... that sort of thing?
Raysur, where are you in your restoration? How long before you are finished?
Have you installed gaskets dry before?

Re: Oil leak (BIG K)
I used Felpro cork gaskets the first time on my valve covers. THis time, i have some rubber ones ready. I plan on using Permatex on both the head and the valve cover. The head has a very porous surface, and the cork doesn't seal well against it.
It's just a pain to get that drivers side one on. Maybe I'll yank the wiper motor this time, instead of the smog pump.
I put a floresent dye with a black light to find the leaks I wanted to get all of them at once. Valve covers were leaking like crazy. Thats what we did when I worked at the dealership it saves you alot of time and guess work.
