Default Intake Upgrade

Its time for me to buy a new intake and reading many posts on this forum it seems that the superram from accel is a pretty solid choice but I was wondering how it compares to other intakes such as the stealthram or miniram. I've looked at flow numbers for the superramand it looks like its a more torque oriented intake. I was just wondering which of the three intakes would give me the best 1/4 mile times and which one works the best with nitrous?

the stealth ram / custom plenum is somewhat new to this forum, so I imagine Grumpy will jump in anytime. As for the SR or Miniram/LT1 intake....

Do a search- the archives have many a discussion on these. But the basics are that yes, the SR is a torquier intake with a broader power curve best suited to automatics. The miniram/LT1 is more peaky and a higher RPM combination better left to 6 speeds.

As for 1/4 mile times... someone else will have to chip in there, but my guess is that it really just depends on your setup and driving skill. You got me on the nitrous, I'm not sure if the intake design matters?

Run another search, there have been NUMEROUS debates on the SR vs. MR.

They can give the same 1/4 times, it just depends on the combination. Nitrous will work with either.

the best choice will depend on your engine combo, the stock TPI and heads on a L98 engine flow in the 200cfm range, if you spend most of your time in the 1000rpm-3500 rpm range porting the stock TPI will work fine!. the accell super ram is an excellent mid range intake on a mildly built engine, and will do a great deal to help your engine if your basically trying to get a engine tuned for about the 2500rpm-5000rpm range, its a P.I.T.A. too work on but would be a very good choice if your useing a basically stock engine with maybe a cam upgrade, but stock it flows in the 245cfm range. if your running an engine combo and GEARING that allows you to use higher flow rates, and keep your engines average rpm range slightly higher, the custom plenum /stealth ram combo will allow you to get the airflow rates in the 275cfm (300cfm with port work) range, that will require better heads and a cam before youll be able to use that potential air flow but its a very noticable improvement over both the stock TPI and SUPER RAM if you can use that extra airflow. the main differance is that a stock TPI starts hurting performance at about 4400rpm, the super ram extends the rpm about another 1000rpm, and the steath ram extends the engines breathing potential about another 1000rpm to the 6400rpm plus range while still haveing excellent mid and high rpm hp/tq, but due to significantly larger ports and flow numbers you loose a little low rpm tq, HOLLEY tests showed a 66hp hp gain (ALL ABOVE about 4400rpm)on a basically stock 1992 camaro with the change from TPI to STEALTH RAM intakes, here this might interest you

on something like a corvette engine with 383 or larger displacement and good flowing aftermarket heads and a good cam you will normally get excellent results from the significantly higher flowing intakes. I ran all five comon intakes,(PORTED TPI,MINI RAM,SUPER RAM,MODDED SUPER VIC. EFI, AND STEALTH RAM)and my 383 11:1 cpr full roller engine works much better with the stealth ram than any other intake

I have a 355ci engine with a 210/216 duration cam at .050, aluminum trickflow heads, and forged internals, with a set of hooker headers the intake is the next piece in completing my engine. How good would the custom plenum/stealthram peform? The stealthram looks more promising to future upgrades. Thanks for the feedback
