Have you used the parking brake?, if so..then it might still be engaged enough to set the light, but not enough to engage the brakes themselves.
Next check the brake fluid level, if it's JUST a little low that light will come on. After bleeding my brakes, at the track, it was on till I added more fluid.
Your '96 has a dual circuit system switch which activates the warning light when only half of the brake system is operational. Have you checked your fluid level in the reservoir?
The fuild level is fine. I checked the fuild and it looked weird so I bleed the fronts until the fuild looked ok. The backs where bleed around 3 months ago. The light is still engaged after using the parking brake.
OK, I misunderstood. I didn't realize you were describing the "brake" light that is displayed when you set the parking brake. Set the E-brake, depress the release button and move the lever with a little more force to the off position. If the light remains on, the indicator switch may need adjusting. The switch is located at the rear of the pivot mechanism on the E-brake lever.
Thanks, I thought the ebrakes were the problem; so I bought a used handle assembly from Vette2Vette used parts. Haven't had a chance to install due to the daily rain we are receiving.
Before you replace the e-brake mechanism, locate the indicator switch on the "new" e-brake and understand how it works. You may just have to adjust your present e-brake switch.
I had the same problem on my 93 develop shortly after your last post. I don't know if replacing the e-brake switch did it for you or not. I unplugged mine and found it is ok (although I have a new one coming in....$3.50 for the switch from Ecklers and had other stuff to order anyway). Mine turned out to be the master cylinder pressure switch. The switch failed and turned on the brake light on the dash. The part runs $10.99 from MAD or Ecklers.
Thanks Neil, I was looking through the manual last night and I saw the switch thing. I will try that too since the switch is inexpensive. I still haven't fixed mine yet as you can tell.
It is really easy to install. Just unplug the harness, unscrew it (I could do it by hand) and screw the new one in. You don't lose any brake fluid! For once, a quick 10 minute fix, including washup!!! It is about time. Everything else is like :banghead: .
