Default Denny's Nitrous Ready Halfshafts

I thought I'd post a picture comparing the stock aluminum halfshaft to the set of Denny's Nitrous Ready halfshafts I just picked up. The angle of the pic makes the aluminum one look slightly longer, but they truly are identical in length. If you can actually brake one of these Denny's will replace them for free. :)

Circumference
Aluminum: 11"
Denny's: 9.5"

So what can break now hmmm.... spindles, driveshaft, dana 44 yokes.

Those look great, are those steel yokes? I'd guess they are........ I wonder if there are any appreciable difference between these and VanSteel units?........probably not much if at all.........

Hey, nice work at cleaning up those half shafts. Does the rest of your undercarraige look as sweet?

Yup steel yokes welded right to the rest of the unit. These are probably heavier, but I don't know which can accept more power. These are about $350 new.

Thanks, I wish it did, lol!!!! Heck I just wish the car ran! :smash:

$ see above and weight difference I'm not sure right now. The denny's have u-joints in them and I don't think I have any of my spare aluminum ones with u-joints in them right now.

*edit*

The steel one is 11lbs with the u-joints.
The aluminum one is 4lbs w/o the u-joints.

Most of the weight is in the U-joints. Maybe I have some u-joints out in the barn, i'll have to check.

0 unless we get good weather and I take a couple days off from work and put 500 miles on the car.

[EDIT]Those the half shafts you polished on the car with the car running? [I remember reading that post a few years ago...the thought alone scares the hell out of me, being under there with a rag and the half shafts spinning. NO THANKS!]

When Eric(yoslambo1) see's this post...I'll bet you his half shafts are coming off for a polish job! :jester :p:

Mine used to look like that!! My mechanic took them to work without me knowing it and buffed them when we we're doing the Dana 44 swap.

Informative post Brian.

Thanks, I'm thrilled about the smaller diameter. It should make changing wheel bearings w/o removing the halfshafts much easier.

Ok.... I found an aluminum shaft with u-joints in it. The only bad thing is that one end had a brute force and the other end a spicer cold forged. Its my "get me home" shaft I bring to the track.

Denny's: 11lbs
Aluminum w/o U-Joitns: 4lbs
Aluminum w/mismatched U-Joints: 7lbs

I bet with another spicer in there it would be about 7.5lbs for the aluminum.

So.... that would be an increase of 3.5 pounds of unsprung weight per side. 7 pounds of unsprung = 17.5 pounds of sprung weight. So I'm looking at an ET loss of about 0.0175 by bolting these on plus lower HP at the wheels for a heavier drivetrain.

Thats ok, its worth it. :)

Don't forget that the new shafts are a smaller diameter. That wil reduce the spun weight compared to the larger diameter of the stock ones

What kind of coating is that? Just paint? Powdercoat? Do they offer other coatings? I'd hate to buy a set of those and then watch them start rusting in a year... :D

--------------------------------------------------------------

The moment arm of the rotating shaft just got a little smaller. I'd say it's insignificant compared to the tire and wheel. Might make the car just a hair less likely to squirrel off to the right on launch and shifts. Or not. Not anything you could feel without telemetry, for sure.

Energy storage device like a flywheel...rotational inertia/momentum - your rear brakes will work a little harder to slow the car down.

Hee...smaller diameter means your undercarriage just got a smidge more aerodynamic. So you'll become airborne half a mph later than you would've with the old shafts - pressure under the car won't build up quite as much.

Hey Vader, come over here a minute...:D

 Well I haven't gone airborne YET so lets hope that 1/2 mph isn't all that I needed.
