Default Coolant Temperature Gauge

My coolant temperature gauge acts really wonky. It will display low then pop way up, then drop down as fast as it came up. The temperature is actually normal if you check the reading on the ECM. What could be causing this? Which sender is the one that feeds the info to the dash? My car is a 85 and from my understanding there are 3 coolant temp senders? Any help is appreciated.

I'll take a shot since nobody else has chimed in yet... My 88 TPI IROC had 3 temp sensors also... The gauge one was in the front of the motor, either on the waterpump housing, or next to the thermostat housing... Try those first, disconnect the pigtail connector and if memory serves correctly it will go to max reading...

The sender in the left side head is actually just an override temp switch for the fans...

All this is from memory, so it might not be exact but should be close...

Thanks, already got it figured out and tested. Looks like it is bad, going to have to order a new one on Monday. It is on the driver's side of the block.
