It's possible to do a pretty good 4 wheel alignment without expensive tools. I've been aligning my 89 coupe for about a year, after replacing my steering rack twice, and my tire wear is even and normal. Steering is quick and tracking is very good. Chris Teague wrote a good guide that I use. http://vettenet.org/align.html
You can align DIY if you're willing to put in the time. Camber is done with a level. Proper toe-in requires finding the center line of your car and using lots of chalk lines and a homemade tool. I haven't done caster, but I have an idea. Anyway, I'll never pay anyone to do it again. My car has never tracked as straight as it does now and had such good tire wear. The alignment shops have $20K machines for the job, but the guy doing the work only makes $8 an hour. When I did the whole thing myself, I found a lot of problems left from the "professional" shop.
