My heater core sprung a leak. Darn! Is this a big job? Where can I find instructions on removing and replacing and most reasonable place to purchase a new one? Thanks :)
Some say its a HUUUUUGE job requiring disassembly of most of the dashboard. Fastguy says not at all and to just remove the passenger seat (so you can lay down there), the hush panel, the ECM and then the core. :)
Maybe its just me, but I can't read the text at all. Is there anyway to blow this up so its readable? I'm probably being stupid and missing something. Wouldn't be the first time.
Those are full sized photos. Right click on each link and save them to your hard drive. Then open them with a program like http://www.irfanview.com and you should be able to see them clearly.
Thanks for the great info guys. This is going to be a real challange. I think I will just reroute the lines back into themselves at the firewall and do the job this winter so I can drive the car now. The thing is I just bought this car over E-Bay from a small dealer in utah who claimed it was a 9+ car. I had it shipped to Wi. the first time I drove it 1 mile the clutch was slipping very bad so I had to have it replaced now the heater core. The odd thing is the service records show it was replaced 7/18/2000 at 44,070 mi. the car now has 63,044 mi. (cost 217.00 labor 94.53 core) sounds reasonable . The car is a 87 vert with a traco racing motor nothing real hot (374 at crank) but does have a good balanced sound. Thanks for your help, this is a very good forum with decent members. Jim :)
The part # for the heater core is 00000001. They built the car around it. With the right toolsits not a bad job. Just takes some time. Make sure you keep your screws in order cause some look the same but have diffrent tread pitch. :)
A couple of hours??? The main tool must have been a hatchet. It took me three days on my '84. I know I'm not fast, but a first timer, hobbiest, is unlikely to get it done in less than a day, at least on an '84. Good luck, and...
Hopefully Fastguy will chime in, he did his in a couple hours.
Fast guy method might be doable with us guy who done it once before. For people who never done this before (like me last year) then YES GM build the car around the heater core.
So Fast guy method is 2 hours and all other 8-10 hrs. either way DIY so you know that you did put all the screws back and which part did you broke  . If you let someone else do the job, you never know homay screws he left out and how many platic pieces he broke  .
