Ok, here's the deal.....my 85 makes this noise like the serpentine belt is slipping, but with somewhat of a rattle....kind of like a metalic chirping noise. Confused yet? I sure am. Now...it only makes this noise when in OD @ 52-53 MPH @ 1200RPM. At first I thought it was a bad bearing in one of the pulleys. I have since replaced the serpentine belt, tensioner pulley, water pump, and air pump, and the noise is still there, but ONLY at the specified gear/speed/RPM listed above. My mechanic says that the noise is in the transmission, and that it's nearing time for a rebuild. I can't honestly quote what he told me, but it had something to do with a thrust washer...or something like that. I'm not a big fan of automatics, but the tranny in this thing shifts as smooth as a baby's butt. The car has 90K on it, and has had very regular scheduled maintenance. I just can't believe that even if there is a "loose part" in the transmission, that it can't be tightened/adjusted without a complete rebuild. I have heard that these 700R4 transmissions are almost indestructable. If anybody has any experience with this very irritating "noise" or any tips/info I would greatly appreciate the feedback. I'm still not 100% convinced that it's a tranny noise, but then, that's why I'm asking questions instead of making big bucks fixing Vettes for a living. All I do know for sure is that nothing I have replaced up till now has made any difference :banghead:
:cuss Thank You very much in advance! :seeya
Vader, I can't honestly tell. I'm hard of hearing, after 25+ years around big trucks, but I think it sounds like it's coming front of the car. I had the wife drive it tonite while I hung my head out the door and listened, and now I'm not sure. It's one of those kinds of noises that is "centrally located" That's why I'm so friggin frustrated. I think that tomorrow, I might have the wife drive it again, and drive next to her, and see if I can figure it out that way. I don't know what else to do at this point.
