Replaced the bose stereo with a Pioneer along with rear speakers and an amp. Was curious with the front speakers, looked at twice and looks like it would be a bear to remove, is this so or not? Those who have replaced the front speakers please advise + with what size repalcements? Any advice is always appreciated.
Thanks
FRED
Re: Remove Front Speakers-Easy/Hard? (jimswhite92)
Looks like the unit is bigger than the opening that it is fit into???? Just the door panel to remove or is there extra stuff that has to be removed?
Thanks
FRED
I have an 89 coupe and replaced my stereo a couple of years ago. The speakers are easy to get out, the amps are a PITA. I cut the wires going to the amps, leaving the amps where they are. I taped off the power and ground wires and connected the audio wires straight to my new speakers. The stereo has enough power to drive the speakers just fine without the amps anyway. Sounds great, little or no hassle to install.
I believe the 89 is the same as 85. Speakers are easy, the amps are not, you have to take the door apart to remove them, and pull them thru the door itself! About 30 minutes or so per door if you go slow. Just get your knuckles banged up a little. I needed to remove my amps as well to mount my Pioneer 6 1/2" speakers in the doors. Then used a piece of MDF as a base to mount them to.

I've got a 92 and it was a piece of cake. Assuming the 89 is the same.
Interior is quite different from 91 and up. Our 92 the fronts are located in the kickpanels while 90 and earlier I think the speaker is in the door itself.

And you're right, it was a piece of cake on a 92!
You have my attention, I need to fix my front amps. But my 90's front speakers are NOT in the door, but below it.
Yeah, it's easy. 4 screws takes the cover off then 3 more for the speaker and then unplug it.
The car had a Pioneer unit also when I bought it and it just ran into the stock amps and speaker. It sounded pretty good but could be better.
Since then I have changed the rear speakers to 6"x9" Pioneer's still using the stock amp. The two speakers I took out are now in the doors with the others with their own separate amp (6 amps now). I added a pair of tweeters to the front with adjustable crossovers using the now 4 stock speakers as woofers only. It sounds much better than the description.
I bought the Pioneer rear speakers, crossovers and the stock amps off Ebay and I already had the dome tweeters left over from an old home stereo. I have about $100 extra into the sound system and, IMO, it sounds exceptional well-much better than the stock Delco-Bose system. Unless you want to set off car alarms as you drive by like some of the kids do, this is all anyone would need, IMO.
I know this wasn't exactly what your question was but hey, info is where you find it.
