Torque limit on the 700 is something like 400-425TQ (crank), over that youre on borrowed time with the stock transmission. It can be beefed up though, or you can switch to 4L80/TH400.
But if you put a tranny cooler in, it would help immensely.

 Yikes! I'm already at 415tq (crank) and I'm bearly modded! But of course, I have the stock tranny cooler as well as a BIG B&M Supercooler. :D
If I'm not mistaken I think that Corky might have a stock tranny with just a shift kit installed..........We'll see if he replies to correct me if I'm wrong, but if he does he's putting out just as much power as I am....
Just going by what a reputable tranny shop in my area said, and my own experience from reading GM stuff on it, by no means should anyone accept it as gospel/hard fact.
GM must have used the good stuff in your 700 to get an 11 second pass out of it. i've got about 520 torque on mine and it lasted a week. luckily it just burned out the 3-4 clutch pack and i'm now rebuilding it with bullet proof inerds. i didn't even get to the track with it. :steering:

you probally had the tv cable not adjusted right that will do it
I played around with many different internal parts, and let me tell youGM did do it pretty darn right. If you have a late Corvette core 700R4, upgrade your 3-4 backing plate, trans cooler, put in a shift kit and you will be able to run 11's with 500 lbft for quiet a while.
I had 15k miles including 2 seasons braket racing with a 10 second 3400lb car and when I pulled the 700 out it still had very little wear even on the 3-4 clutches.
The most important thing is to be very careful with most of the supposed "high performance" 3-4 clutches, more specifically do not use extra clutches in the 3-4 pack. To do so requires using the thin steels and they can not disapate the heat quickly enough ni a high power app. you MUST use .107" steels if you want the 3-4 clutch pack to last with power.

Re: 700R4 Torque capacity.. (LT401Vette)
I've modded the crap outta my '88.
Pushing well over 550 ft lbs at the wheels.
I've went through 7 (seven), rebuilds on the 700R4's.
Finally went with a turbo 400. Supposed to hold 1000 hp+
No over drive though. If you want the over drive unit, call gear vendors.
Great set up. My tranny guy said that there just isn't enough aftermarket hardware to make a 700R4 hold up to 11 sec's 1/4's let alone 10 sec's.
Just my 2 cents.

The IROC next to my car in the signature photo has a 640 hp/562 lb ft of torque engine and (GULP) is going through a rossler 700R(lock up switch also)and vigilante "loose" 3000 convertor. There is no tranny cooler and it's doing fine(7500 miles) I toasted two of the same trannies with 5000 miles each and I am about 70 foot pounds of torque less and a lighter car(head scratcher).
It's hit or miss apparently. My current trans is holding up just fine. Add a cooler for sure, stacked plate type.
All 700s are not created equal. I've gone through seven. That includes buying a "new" 700 from the factory for my 89. It lasted 3 months. The new one is still holding up strong after 8 months of driving. Some people claim they smoke the 700 behind a stock L98... other's do 10s in the 1/4.
Even my two "new" factory 700s behaved quite differently. One shifted softer but would shift from 3-4 under WOT. The other shifted harder but wouldn't shift from 3-4 under WOT!! When I took it back to the dealer, they said they could do nothing about it because they would need to break the speed limit to observe the problem. Pathetic isn't it? I asked him what happens if I buy a new C5 and it misses or has a problem at 101KM/HR.. he said I'm SOL so I said I'll buy a Viper instead ( just to piece him off and make a point).
i dont know about what you mean by pounding but anybody who knows me i race ive allready went 6 times this year alone probally 35-50 passes then all last year a couple of hundrud runs and into the previous year runs also and still going strong. knock on wood and i run bottem to mid 11s all day long not to mention the 5000 miles a year i put on in regular driving
Oh yeah the man above pounds his with unrelentlously. Its still really tight too, as I drove it a little when he was here and we did his TC and front spring.
I too have many runs on my 700 a zillion last year with my 350 and ~12-15 this year at low 11s and the thing never missed a beat.
The original probably would have been fine, if the TV cable had not broke, that is what keeps pressure on your 3-4 clutch packs.
