What mods are needed in order to make an early 86 L98 run with modded "02" mustang GT's. A buddy of mine has a "00" Gt with a cold-air kit, exhaust, and underdrive pullies. He claims that he can smoke my vette in the 1/4. As far as mods that i've done so far are basically all the free mods and Flowmaster exhaust. What else would i need to do in order to put this rustang in his place? :yesnod: Of course all racing will be done at the track :blueangel:
you should be able to hang with him now, it should be pretty close. i was neck and neck with an '02 mustang (the only mod i know he had was flowmaster exhaust). i can't give details since it wasn't on a closed course.
Ok well..... the basics of an L98 is that the intake and exhaust systems are extremely restrictive. Modifying it will all depend on how much you want to spend.
The bad news is that, yes he will smoke you right now. Your car will probably run somewhere in the area of 14.1-14.6 I am going to guess in good tune depending on weather and track conditions.
You could really help it out with something like a set of longtube headers and catback exhaust to get those horribly small exhaust manifolds off. Then possibly while the exhaust is off a new torque convertor will help you launch off the line better.
Unfortunately you have iron heads with your early 86 and they are the least power capable heads out of the 3 you will find on an L98.
I run low 13s with fairly simple mods but since you have the early '86 iron heads I would suggest you also do ceramic coated FL headers.
It depends on how much you realy are willing to do to your car; you can of course get you L98 into the 12s with some head work and a cam.
Also add a TransGo shift kit, a 2,000rpm TC and have the shift points raised into the low 5k RPM range.
BTW, what is the elevation of your local drag strip? If it's like 1,000' above sea level you will need a little more to run low 13s.
Then go the the local strip and practice launches.
You already have a 2000rpm TC, so DONT buy another one. Its something exclusive to the 85 and 86 L98s, dont mess with a good thing.
Basically, the whole intake and exhaust system on the 86 sucks for high hp, as stated. Getting some headers and a new rear Y (if you just did Flow mufflers, and not a full catback) and a Random Tech hi-flo cat will add 15-20hp.
Our heads suck badly, but switching them out for the really good AFR 190 heads is going to cost you $1800. You can also switch to the later 88-91 heads, off a junkyard vette, ebay, or buying them from a performance shop (most will have a set or two). Theyre gonna be much cheaper, and will help you catch him.
Then youre gonna have to do some intake work. Either you can buy a bigger base intake manifold and bigger runners (websites below), or port the stock stuff. If you just want to catch him, port everything and do the exhaust work.
If you want to kick his azz soundly, theres a whole other route to go.
That route would be the Superram, either of the heads i alluded to, a bigger cam, and the headers. He shouldnt be a problem after that.
Look at Lingenfelter.com for the Superram, or you can use the accel base with the stock plenum/runners. They also sell bigger runners.
TPiS.com also sells a bigger base and runners, as does Edelbrock.
But youre going to spend some real money if you want to destroy him. Theres no such thing as cheap HP.
The bottom line is it all comes down to how much you want to spend to go faster. Mustang parts are soooo cheap becuase there are about 5 mustangs on every corner.
uuuuuuhhhhh.........a 150hp shot should do the trick!!!!!!
That would be the cheap easy route though. Depends one what you have to spend. I'm sure someone could hook you up with a 1000hp twin turbo set up. What is your budget??? :D
