Hi guys - anybody know of a manufacturer that produces an upgrade to the stock C4 PS pump? This little reverse rotation devil has led me to believe that somebody indeed must have come up with something better by now, no? Every major manufacturer that I have inquired with has said that they do not know of anybody that works with the reverse rotation pumps, and most certainly have no interest in getting into them either!?
Re: C4 Race Power Steering Pump (Hydratech Braking)
I can tell you $300K SCCA Trans Am Camaro cars were running stock GM pumps 4 years ago. I believe Sweet Engineering offered blueprinting service to help address durability and factory sloppy tolerances. Unless the OEM unit a factory defect, they last a long time on the track.
Let me save you some money. The $400 stock OEM C4 pump is nothing more than a generic GM V8 LT1 Caprice station wagon pump with a different pressure control valve installed to provide higher effort steering. The C4-specific valve is available separately from GM for about $18 and it drops into the high pressure hose port. If you have a bad pump, you might consider a $50 Pep Boys Caprice pump with a new $18 GM C4 valve.
The regulator is removed using a socket or box end wrench in about 10 seconds. The fitting for the high pressure hose simply unscrews to reveal the regulator valve. Just lift it out with tweezers or paperclip and drop a new one in, couldn't be easier.
"Station Wagon"....I was being a little sarcastic. All LT1 pumps are the same, except for the cheap regulator valve available separately. Do not pay one penny extra for an Impala SS or Corvette pump. It can come from a 4 dr sedan, Buick Estate Wagon, Roadmaster, Caprice or whatever. If your pump is worn out, buy any LT1 pump and reuse your old valve.
The valve assy is a simple, primitive looking gizmo with a small coil spring that comes in varying strength and a precision machined end with a hole drilled in it. It will not explode when you remove it. It is screwed together & comes out as one piece unit.
that's really good info, i appreciate it. i vaguely remember you saying something about it last year, but i didn't pay close enough attention since i didn't need a pump back then!
