Default throttle body, which brand?

I am going to order a 58mm throttle body tomorrow morning, what brand is best?

I have heard alot of horror stories on here about tuning problems with aftermarket ones.

Arizona Speed and Marine (AS&M) makes quality 54 & 58mm billet throttle bodies.

I have a 52mm from BBk and I think they also sell the 58mm. I really like the quality, and it performs great.

a-poop:

I can't give an opinion on the 58mm, but please be aware that if you are contemplating a BBK, that BBK and BBK/Edelbrock TB's are not exactly the same...

I have a 52mm BBK/Edelbrock on my '86; it took a good bit of work to get everything to fit.

I'm getting ready to send my OEM 48mm to David Koldos...You can never have too many spare parts...

From what I've heard, TPIS and AS&M have the best quality throttle bodies. I had always thought that they were modified stock units, but the TPIS on my Vette definately isn't a stock piece. I have a suspicion that my TPIS is a 58, which is way too big for my motor. Anyway, I've heard a million horror stories about the BBK/Edelbrock being a lousy fitting piece, so I bought a Holley for my IROC. it's machined out of a piece of billet aluminum, unlike the cast finish of the BBK (since I polished everything, I didn't want a cast throttle body). It fit good, and mechanically it works beautifully.

I've got a TPIS on the Vette, and so far I have no reason to think anything bad about it. I have an awful dead spot in the throttle, but I suspect this is a TPS issue, and certainly not anything to due with the throttle body.

Here's an up-close pic of my holley:

My 58MM BBk works fine, I dis-sassembled it when I got it and found that it uses an actual set of sealed bearings for the shaft to rotate in.

With the bearings for the shaft to rotate in, what else is there to go wrong?

The only thing I did have to do was file down the TPS tab @ .030" (took @ 1 minute) as it would rub the BBK body, once filed down it works to my satisfaction and as mentioned the price is right.

Maybe they build their 58s differently. My experience has been with 52s because none of my friends have the 500hp necessary to justify a 58. With the 52s, the butterflies fit poorly, the shaft binds, the boot from the MAF won't fit over the mouth, and the cast finish sucks. Do a search on thirdgen.org and you'll hear a lot of complaints.

But that's not to say that holley doesn't have their share of complaints too. A lot of people with the holley units complained that there's no throttle stop, but I've only heard that complaint from 89-92 owners. The older style like I use on my Vette doesn't need a throttle stop because the bracket hits the body at precisely the right position to prevent it from opening too far. The holley also pissed me off because they decided that the stock TPS bolt size wasn't good enough, so they used a different thread pitch. The screws they included were too short, so I had to go buy hardware before I could mount my TPS. I also needed to trim the TPS, but apparently that's the case with the BBK too.

But... this is why the Holley and BBK cost less than TPIS and AS&M :)
