I just picked up my recentley purchased 96 LT4 from the shop. I was cleaning the wheels and noticed that the front brakes DID NOT HAVE THE CORVETTE LETTERS ON THEM!!!! Now I've had a c5 for the past couple years and I swear I remember that in 1996 the LT4 came with the big brakes with the corvette lettering on the outside. My last LT4 was a collectors edition and I KNOW they had these brakes. I bought the car knowing I would build it up but I wasnt expecting to do the brakes yet. Does anybody have any input on SSBC corps. 4 piston 43mm front caliper package for $1295? I know the C5 upgrade is a 2 piston and I was wondering what the difference in braking would be between the two. The SSBC is about $400+ more and was wondering if it would be worth it. Someone please chime in with some anwsers because I am not happy with the brakes and since the car wont ever see a track I cant see spending 3k for the fronts alone. Thanks much!
In 1996, only the CE and Grand Sport had the CORVETTE lettering on the calipers. Rest got the standard 13 J55 brakes, grey. SSBC are suppose to be good from what I hear, but I have no experiance with them.
So is there a difference in performance from the regular 1996 brakes to the CE/GRAND SPORT?
Thanks
No, performance is basicly the same, cosmetic differance. I had the standard J55, then went to the blk CORVETTE lettered calipers when I had to replace one due to sticking, braking seemed the same. (I put on new pads, so it stopped a little better).
The argument with the GS calipers is that they're supposedly a little stiffer than the J55s, which would into play more in track use than anything else.

I thought about these before I went with the C5 brakes.
SSBC told me they won't fit under the five spoke wheels -- although, I question if the person that told me this knows what he was talking about.
Plus, since I use my car a lot, if I need brake parts (like a rotor) in a hurry, I can go to the local auto store and buy C5 brake parts.
Unless you are going to track the car, IMO just get yourself a 4 wheel set of PFC Z pads, purge out ALL the old fluid and enjoy. You will notice a significant improvement in braking perfomance for cheap. (total ~ $200)
