Default Comp Cam quesitons

Has anyone used this cam in there LT1?? It looks just a tad smaller than the Hotcam and CompCam says non PCM tuning is required...

COMP extreme CCA-212-218-12

Duration 212 218
Lift w/1.5 .488 .495
Lift with 1.6 .521 .528
lobe 112

I'm thinking this sounds good for a factory exhaust, A4, 2.59 geared car with only a valve job to the heads... Low end torque is important to me which is why I have ruled out the Hotcam

The low end torque is going to be taken care of by the 383 cubic inches. Don't even worry about that.

Youll still need a custom program for that cam.

Vader-What cam is in your 383 LT1? 383's can be built for torque, but it's certainly not a factor that comes with the displacement.

Torque is going to be increased with displacement, and it should be quite enough for him.

And any cam much different than stock is going to need a custom program, if you want all the power it can give. That one should even pass emissions easily.

The CompCam I have in my L98 is the 501-8, the mildest of their cams for this engine.
The specs are the same as the cam you mentioned except for the duration. The duration on my cam is 264 degrees intake aand 268 degrees exhaust at .006" tappet lift.

This cam has so much bottom end I can fry 315-35/17 Sumatomo's all day long. But I have the 3.07 gearing.

FWIW,
BIG JIM

Vader,

While we're talking about comp cams, how long do they last, anyway?
If, for example, you use a 941 Comp cam spring set, a cam like he described,
new lifters (my cam has .563/562 lift, but it's similar to that cam)?

I read in a book just now, performance cams are designed for 50k mi.
Is that even with lots of mild highway driving?

That would kinda suck...

no thats more for solid cams and normal hyd. cams... Roller cams usually experiance very little wear...

Vader, the need not to program was jsut a added plus.. I'm planning on reprogramming since http://www.pcmforless.com can have one done and shipped in a day or two and they only run about 150.00 for the 93 vette chip with 6 montsh of updates... (piggyback setup)

vader - I've read in the archived posts that the Hotcam shows a NOTICABLE loss in low end torque but then really wakes up at 3000k... thats too high for my driving style. This is my daily driver..

Like he said above, thats more for the older style cams, where periodic adjustments are needed, than the hydraulic rollers. These should last almost forever.
