IIRC, the reason they don't offer a cast 396 crank is because of the journal webs...(the unmachined areas that connect the journals)...With the 3.875" stroke, they are just too "stretched" to withstand the stresses of a "reasonable" redline in a cast configuration...
But I'll tell you, I'd spend the money in a second to get the forged 396 over the 383...
so in my daily driver project rebuild.. that i'd just like to make some resonable numbers with... maybe someplace between 310-370 rwhp.. what would be the least expensive way to a 396? can it be done for less than 2000.00 total if i do all the assembly etc?
Give, Ohio Crankshaft, a call. Their ad in "National Dragster" only shows up to 3.75" stroke, in nodular iron. They DO show a 3.875" stroke shaft for $425.00. 800-333-7113. Good luck, and...

I think you'll be around $2,500 for just the crank, rods and pistons (all forged). And don't forget all of the other things you'll need (align bore, block cleaning/clearance work, bearings, rings, tools, gaskets, etc).
If you are just looking for 310-370 RWHP, then just do a cast 383 and put a hotcam stick in it. Should put you around 330rwhp. Want more than that, just do head work.
