I tried searching for the answer, but found nothing.
I have a 94 six speed that runs hot (may be part of the problem) and stutters when I let the clutch out to start moving in first gear. The best way to deal with the problem seems to be to floor it  , but I would rather figure out what the problem is so I don't look like a stupid kid who can't drive a stick :jester . The problem is even worse with the air conditioning on and only occurs when the engine is hot (above 220 degrees). It is also much worse when the engine is under load, going up hill, or with a hefty passenger. I am afraid that if I don't deal with the problem, I will wear out the clutch because I have to slip it excessively to try to avoid the problem. Any help, suggestions, ideas, half-cocked suppositions would be appreciated. :steering:
Re: Stutter when accelerating in 1st? (JADVette94)
These are EXACTLY the same symptoms I have on my car. No codes other than an occasional p0300. I have replaced the plugs with NGK iridiums and no change. I also looked under the fuel rail covers and started plugging off vacuum ports hoping it would smooth out. I actually found a couple of small vac leaks, one at a real flimsy mushy elbow on the left hand side of the manifold near the brake vac port and the other on the right side of the manifold, a very weird tee lookin' thing had gotten brittle and broken near the port causing a small leak.
I started to replace the plug wires but COULD NOT get them loose from the left side of the opti. I 'm gonna' to have to remove the pump to get to them and since that is the case, I went ahead and ordered an opti from Jason at Sam Taylor today. I'm just going to throw that at it while I'm in there, no way am I taking it apart again for a $195.00 optispark. It has 82K on it and I suspect it is in fact my problem anyway.
Hmmm. Could it be my opti? Mine has 81,000 miles on it now. I know optis are prone to failure, but usually you get the missing and poor performance at the high end of the power range when optis fail according to the archive searches that I read on this forum. Mine only has the stuttering and missing low in the rpm range and usually only starting out in first gear, sometimes 2nd if I lug it down too far.
Has anyone else had this problem and successfully solved it?

doesn't really sound like an opti problem to me...i would rule out the cheaper stuff before springing for an opti...had the same type of symptoms on mine before and after i had an opti go south (leaking water pump took it out)
I just put on a new exhaust, but the car was doing it with the old exhaust as well. The only time it happens is when the car is very, very hot. Does that mean it is just because my car is too hot, or could it be because my o2 sensor is going south and hence the problem only occurs in closed loop? If it is my o2 sensor, how long do I have before I ruin my cats and have a very expensive problem?
By the way, thank you for all your help so far.
Re: Stutter when accelerating in 1st? (JADVette94)
Spark plug wires. Get a multitester and check the resistance of each wire individually. You're looking for one or more wires with unusually high resistance.
Plug wires really should be replaced every 30K miles whether they need it or not.
