My alternator is screwing up, but it won't act up when I try to check it. Problem might be partially heat sensitive. Not sure.
Ok. Pulled up to a red light and the bat light came on and the meter read 12V. Down the road and 14V. Same thing the next day, except when I got it home, 12V. The voltage at the alt bat terminal 12.06V. Turned key off, 12.6 V, same as Battery. Took it down to store and it checked good. New, 3yrs old, life-time warrenty. Back on the car, 14.4V. Now I'm hoping it will hurry up and die a quick death.
i had/have a similar problem, i have a bad wire in the harness under the dash, pull on the bundle one way, alternator shuts off, volts drop to 12.x, pull the other way and they go back up to 13.x-14.x...i haven't fixed it yet, but the problem hasn't returned for a while.
i did the same thing as you, when i first had the problem i took the alternator to the parts store and it tested ok, i bought a new one any way, installed it, same problem, put the old one back in and am still using it now.
i first suspected wiring when the alt would shut off on a right turn, and come back on a left turn
Since I installed a Tuff Stuff chrome 140amp. altenator.....along with my March Pulleys...have not had any charging problems....
Must be lucky I guess....
Good Luck...

Okay, tell me more about the "chrome 140amp" alternator. Where did you get it, how much, etc. (This forum is going to break me.) I'd like to increase my alt out put potential as I'm installing a Meziere HD coolant pump adding to the demand of the electrical system.
BTW, Have you checked the battery cable connections? I know it sounds simple, but a good connection is critical for good operation of the alternator and electrical system.
