I drive my '85 weekends and nice weather. when I start it up after sitting it cranks right up, but after I drive it ,park and then re-start it later on it is much more difficult to start. Any ideas of why??
Leaky cold start valve. It seems that every few years my cold start valve starts to leak. Get yourself a fuel injector tester from Sears Hardware. About $50. Connect it to the cold start valve connector. Start the car. Press the pulse button several times. You may have to wait a few seconds between pulses so the car won't stall. This always fixes mine when it starts hard after it's been sitting for a bit.
Thanks, but cold is when it starts best. it's only I drive it for a while and it's warmed up that I have the hard start problem. I've replaced plugs, wires, tuned it up, cleaned injectors, t-body,etc. It runs fine, I just don't understand why it starts so well when it's cold, and needs coaxing when it's warm.
thanks, bob
I did not misread your problem. Trust me. Mine starts great cold also. I think what happens is the cold start valve turns on for a bit when it is cold then just sits there and crud can build up on the tip of it. Then it starts to leak. It still works to start a cold car because after sitting for a while all the gas has leaked out and gets dissipated in the engine. It is only when it is hot it does not have time to dissipated and you have to much gas and it takes a while to start.
I think you hit it . What you are describing is exactly what it does and it does seem like it has too much gas. Thank you much,. I can get the tester can you tell me where it hooks up to?
You could check the cold start injector, but if you have stock injectors, they are probably VERY tired by now, and are leaking. Also could be your fuelpump if it is not holding pressure well enough after a hot run..
I'd test the fuel pressure if it holds with a Gauge... There are topics on the forum about how to test the injectors while on the car (kinda... :D )
