Default open end torque wrench

I searched and the last guy that asked this was not succesful in getting a good answer, so I try myself...

I am replacing a driveshaft on another car (no vette) and you CANNOT get a socket in there to torque the bolts. On something this important I would prefer to get the torque correct.

Are there open ended torque wrenches? If so, don't I need an adapter for every size? Do the shops have an entire collection? For this job I would get just the size required and add other sizes later.

Use a "crows foot" attachment. It's like the end of an open ened wrench with a hole for the ratchet. This does throw off the torque reading, but there is a way to figure it out... Hopefully somebody will chime in...

My torque wrench came with a formula to calculated with the crow feet. Your basically doing a ratio of the new length/old length and multiplying it by the toque reading.

A crowfoot wrench has so little distance between the nut center and the center of the square for the torque wrench, that the slight increase in the moment arm is insignificant and the error is "lost" in the inaccuracy of the torque calibration of the torque wrench. I wouldn't worry about it because the actual applied torque to the nut is increased very little.

Crowsfeet are used in aircraft rebuild/repair quite often. I do not use any formula, the normal torque setting is "close enough". Think about that the next time you climb into an airplane! :D

I was an aircraft mech for quite some time and the crows foot is the only way to touque tubing nuts. Of course I had to be the one to torque the "wing nuts" that flew the damn things.

Tailgunner ~ I agree, the price is steep. I just wanted to show you where you could get one. A simple crows foot on an existing torque wrench should be sufficient.

For occasional use, get a cheap set at Harbor Freight.

Yeah I know, thx. I guess since this is the first time I have even thought about needing one, I'll get the crows foot (unless HF's set is cheap enough) and go from there.
