Thank you! One thing that jumped out at me is that it seems many of us who use full synthetic oil are changing it too much. Is every 7,500 miles actually true? Based on what I've read here, many of us change it at 3,000 miles. Are we wasting money?

I'll add this to raise some hell.

My brother recently decieded that I know something about cars. Ha. So he asked me a question about using synthetic oil. I'll tell you the question after some background on my brother.

My brother always buys GM cars. He buys them new and does all the maintanance except warranty repair, which is rare in his world.

His cars usually last to 250,000 miles or more, and he has never pulled a head. He really gets angry when something like an alternator or water pump goes bad. Car history is from a Roadmaster Convertable (OK Grumpy, date that one) when he was in the army to his current 93 Firebird (his favorite). I tried to introduce him to the scanner, but he has no interest - things just don't break that often for him. When he feels it's time, he usually give the car to one of his kids or family, who tend to drive it for a while longer. The Chevette went to 350,000 miles and needs a valve job. They think it will go another 100,000 before the bottom end needs serious work. We are not quite sure of the mileage on his previous Firebird, but it's well over 300,000 with the heads never removed and used every day. It needs a quart of oil every 1500 miles or so.

Question from my Brother:

Do you think if I used a synthetic oil I could extend my oil change intervals?

Question from me:

At what interval do you change your oil now?

Ans: 7,000 miles; it really a drag to change the oil that often.

Q (from me): What oil are you using?

Ans: Quaker State. I've always used Quaker State and that's all that I will use. I want to use Quaker State synthetic, if I can double my oil change intervals.

Q (from me): What filter are you using?

Ans: Fram or whats on sale. I really like Fram.

My answer to my Brother: It seems to me that whatever you are doing is working well. I recommend that you don't change a thing.

My Brother: But I really want to extend my oil change interval, it's a PIA.

Me: Um, you could use a bypass oil filter setup, change the filter every 12,000 miles and a top draw pure synthetic and perhaps go as long as 20,000+ miles. But you really need to do oil analysis to determine if the oil is holding up to your use in your car.

Q from my brother: How much does that cost?

Ans (from me): Well the oil is $4.50/ quart, the bypass system is over $50.00 and uses a $9.00 filter and you need to add a quart with the filter change. Oil analysis is around $20.00, but you really just need to determine how long you can go; maybe only a couple of times the first cycle and then just once in a while.

Ans (from my Brother) Huh? I want to use Quaker State synthetic, and why should I test, that costs more than an oil change?

Ans (from me): Like I said, I think you should keep doing exactly what you are doing, because it works for you.

And that's the truth.

Pete

I use an after market oil cooler made by B&M.....And it uses the ford oil filter....PH8a.....larger than stock....but oh so clean.....use the fram....X2 Part number XG8A with extened gaurd....Ultra High Capacity.....amd the Valvoline Extended Service oil.....10wt by 40wt. in winter...and the 20w/50wt during summer months....
Works well on my 87k mile '84......live and learn....
Just a thought....
