After finding the temperature was fine with my 84, I drove my 84 to work today. About 20 miles into the commute, I lost just about all power. The throttle was almost pegged and I was going nowhere. When I got to work which was about 5 more miles, the car would not turn off when I turned the ignition off.
After about 5 minutes and an act of god did it turn off. I started the car about 3 hours later, it just does not sound right, kind off like a hissing noise.
I placed my hand over the muffler and and feel no output. I think it is the cat.
Please help.

If you felt no pressure when you put your hands on the exhaust tips....must be either cats.....or a faulty muffler.....
What are you using???
How many miles did you say????
Check it...something is plugged...I know you figured this out but putting my 2 cents in...SORRY!!!!!!!!!!!
You know just a thought....but if the cat is that bad it will probably be easier to gut........Right????
When mine did this I gutted the cat. BUT, find out why it failed. nine times out of ten, it's caused by a rich mixture. Check for codes. Besides ruining the cat, it wastes gas, washes the cylinder walls, dulutes the oil, and causes havoc in general. Good luck, and...
