..and can it be caused by running sub 93 octane in a 96 LT-1? The reason I ask is the car seemed to run fine until yesterday afternoon and now when I accelerate I can hear some faint noise from the engine compartment that's difficult to describe and I'm wondering if that's what it is. The car idles fine and once I ease of the pedal, the sound ceases. The only things different were a fifteen gallon fill-up at a Hess station and driving for about two hours straight in rainstorm prior to me noticing this. I've got about 59K on it and as I said, up to this point, no problems. Any ideas? Solutions? Thanks in advance...
Re: What exactly does pinging sound like? (tobijohn)
Lots of marbels bouncing around....
Trouble time......could blow a hole thru your piston......so be extra careful...what octane fuel are you using.....what timeing???????Could even be caused by carbon build up.....add a can of fuel system cleaner into your fuel tank.....
Just my thoughts..
Good Luck

You have to be careful. I blew an engine on the track from pre-ignintion and never once heard a sound. The first I knew I had a problem was when I was black flagged for smoking. I had broken three ring lands. What the factory manual doesn't tell you but the oil companies do is that 92 octane is only good for certain driving conditions. If its very hot and the engine is under heavy load and is not running rich, your octane requirement goes up to 96 octane. I'm not making this up. Go to the gas companies web sites and read.
I wouldn't worry too much if you have the knock sensor hooked up. It pulls out lots of timing at the slightest hint of pre-ignition. :seeya :seeya :seeya

Well, the car is bone stock so I assume the timing is stock as well the knock sensor being hooked up. As per another member's reply to this post, I topped off the tank with Shell premium (about seven gallons) and threw in a can of STP fuel treatment. I'm going to take it easy with the right foot until I get a chance to run through this tank of gas and then go fill it up with Sunoco or some other name brand. For the time being, it seems as long as I stay under about 2500 rpm, I can avoid the situation entirely...
Re: What exactly does pinging sound like? (tobijohn)
Well, it looks like the steps mentioned in the previous post took care of the problem for now. Had to run up to the grocery store for a few sundry items and took the opportunity to step all over it. No ping, whatsoever. Now all I have to worry about is that right to left play in the steering wheel and some intermittent buzzing/rattling from somewhere under the floorpan...
