So tonight I figured I'd change what I believe to be 14 year old power steering fluid in my 89 vette. So I start siphoning off the old stuff and it looks like coffee. I pour new fluid (Valvoline SynBlend) and it looks like water. Well, I syphon out a few more times to change out the fluid and I notice that I am sucking out little flakes of something out of the reservior. I ended up with about 10 little flakes when it was all over, but I plan on repeating this in about a week. Has anyone else observed this? Is this a sign of upcoming $$$$$. :(
I'm sorry....but I can't seem to why to change the streeing fluid.....like are you having problems wit the streeing??????
Just let me know..what problems were you having with the streeing system...if its not broke....leave it alone....
thanks

Re: Power Steering Fluid Change (SkipI)
Skip, don't know what the flakes are, but you are doing the right thing. Use a turkey baster and keep putting new in; until the fluid is clean. I recommend GM "cold climate" PS fluid due to some limited problems with Valvoline and GM seals.
I find that the PS fluid is rarely maintained, and also note the failures of the rack in C4's.

Sorry Tony I disagree, the fluid that is discolored is not a good thing! If a fluid is runnning thru a cooler that means that fluid is subject to alot heat.
So changing that fluid is not a bad Idea.
Good idea, fluid is cheaper than new steering rack. Good way of doing it is to lift the front wheels off the ground and while engine running turn steering wheel lock to lock. Fluid will flow out of the house where you can collect it. Watch for burps.
While you are at it remove resorvoir drain all the fluid out and use pressure washer to clean inside around the magnet you might be surprised what comes out.
I changed fluids when I installed a new PS rack pipe on my '92. It's cheap insurance and as others have said, it's beats buying a new rack or pump. :yesnod:
You know... I started wondering... the moan I hear from the power steering pump only happens when the engine is at idle speed and I am turning. This is about 500-600 rpm on my car... could the moan simply be the effect of turning with the power steering pump going too slow?
:iagree:
I agree with Les. I've changed the P/S fluid onc a year in my cars. I have yet to have a problem. The highest mileage so far was 198,000 in a Turbo Coupe with no problems. I thin it is important to change the oil, especially with a rack. Just my OP
