I searched the tech section and have done many of the reccomended things, but my 94 LT1 six speed is still overheating (hitting 240+ degrees).
I have: pulled and cleaned the radiator, flushed/changed coolent, added water wetter, and the fans (at least one of them) come on.
Should I put in a Meziere water pump? Could my water pump be shot? Is it possible that my car is running too lean, causing high temps?
The car has 81,000 miles, and I am not sure if the water pump has ever been changed (or if the coolent had ever been changed prior to when I changed it).
The hot temperatures seem to cause my car to stutter when I accelerate from first...and I am tired of it. Please provide me with any suggestions you may have. Thanks
PS: How hot does it need to get to crack heads or cause other serious damage?
My 92 was overheating to the tune of 245 degrees and it turned out to be a "limed" up radiator and its hard to tell because it hard to look into the side tank to look at the core.
Does the temp reach 240+ at hi-way speeds? If it does, that would take the fans out of the problem equation. If the temp only reaches 240+ during stop-and-go traffic, then the fans are suspect.
If the temp is high at all speeds, let the engine cool completely, check the over-flow container for excessive coolant, and remove the fill cap and check for low coolant level in the system. If the over-flow container is full, and the coolant system is low with a cold engine, that would indicate that the siphon effect is not working, and you may have an exhaust head gasket leak.
I was having the same problem with my 88, so I went through the same thing. I changed my water pump, thermostat, flushed the radiator several times but it still would run hot (240) and up. So I replaced the radiator and now she only gets up to 190-203 withg the the A/C on. It's hard to tell if they are bad, and I was about to give up on it and take it to Chevy so they could rape me on the labor, but that fixed the problem. Good luck :blueangel:
Dude, I was right where you are at less than a week ago. I had my mechanic flush the rad with some super flush stuff. I also bought an additive called 40 Below which I mixed with straight distilled water. I think that helped some, but the main thing was the auxillary fan motor had went. Replaced that and everything is hella smooth. Temps in town are like 190 and less. This is in like 85-90 degree weather.
Verify that the fan is still working fine and check all yer fuses too. Eliminate the easy things. I rigged up a fan over-ride switch so I can manually turn on 1 or both fans on mine, or none at all until the chip takes effect.
