my light has been coming on, but not consistently. it's usually after driving it for a longer time and in hotter weather. i check all of my gauges when it comes on, but everything is normal.
Oil Temp - 215
Coolant Temp - 193
Voltage - 14
Oil Pressure - 55-60 (on the highway)
the car doesn't drive any differently and i do regular maintenance.
any suggestions or troubleshooting? i don't have anything to pull the code and i'm usually on my way somewhere and don't have time to stop at the dealer. also, as soon as i turn the car off and then back on, the light goes away (at least until the next time).
Re: "service engine soon" light has been coming on (86_RedRider)
My 86 was doing this last year. The EGR was acting up. You can retrieve the codes by using a paper clip in the ALDL connector below the steering column. Bend a paper clip into a U-shape with the two long legs of the U being about 1/4" apart. The ALDL connector is just below and to the right of the steering column toward the center console. It is a black rectangular plug with 12 pins in it. With the ignition key in the off position, stick the paper clip in the connector so that one leg goes in the top right pin and the other leg goes in the pin immediately to the left of it. These are pins A and B on the ALDL connector. Turn the key to run - do not start the engine. The cooling fan will come on and the check engine light will begin to flash. Pay attention to the way the light flashes. The first code you will get is a code 12 - one long flash - pause - two short flashes. This code will repeat three times. If there are any more codes stored in memory, they will begin to flash as well. If it is your EGR - i think the code is 32 - 3 long flashes - pause - 2 short flashes. Have a pad and pencil handy to jot down the codes. Each code will repeat 3 times then the sequence will start over again with code 12. Any service manual for your car should be able to tell you what the codes mean - even a Haynes manual from the local auto parts store is better than nothing.
