406 re-re-install part 4
Got the new engine Thursday,
put it back in in 1.5 hours, then noticed that the new block has diagonal starter holes and my last 509 casting block had inline holes, so I drilled a new hole. Then I had to drill out and retap the knock sensor hole, coolant return line hole by the oil cooler and the oil temp sensor hole cause the plugs were rusted in place.
Now I thought I was cruisin but I had bought a new molonized distributor gear and already had taken the old one off days ago, put the new on on upside down and spent 5- hours and many gallons of sweat trying to figure it out before Ol'RJ aksed my if I was dumb enough to put it on upside down, and I said "of course" I could be/am that dumb!
I was so I pulled the distributor back out and put it on big diameter end up.Fired it up this morning and it went to ilde immediatly and had 45PSI of oil at 800RPM, and 60 PSI at 2500RPM!
Let it idle for 30 minutes on the ramps and checked all fittings for leaks and general BONEHEAD mistakes.
So I'm going for some test driving and a whole new break in period of 500 miles!

Best of luck on your shakedown Larry!!!!
There's always an oops :banghead: !
Are you going to do the 500 mile break-in all in one day :D ? If I went through your problems, I think I would have to.
Good luck and keep us posted :hurray:
Congrats! (It's about damn time...) :jester

Firstly at 70 MPH and 2500 RPM or os it is running at @ 65 PSI oil pressure. At idle it is about 45 PSI oil pressure, so it seems like the oil pressure problem was in the old block, thankfully we built a new 509 block !
With the new Dewitts radiator the coolant temps today never were higher than 185 with the outside temps at 90 degrees with ALL distilled water and 1-bottle of Watter Wetter.
Oil temp was a high of 215 with NO oil cooler. I will put the faactory oil cooler back on next weekend to see if there is a difference.
Lastly, "babydoll" needs some tuning so I have some questions on the Walbro fuel pump that I will post in the AM.
I did get @ 50 miles on the car today but shes running rough. I will figure this stuff out thru the week and work on tuning next weekend!
This project, appears to be nearing the end but ,,,with my luck the light at the end of the tunnel could be a train  :lolg:
Now that your so good at re and re, build yourself a variety of motors and swap them out depending on your driving style that week. At an hour and a half its just a bit longer than rotating your tires. :jester
What a relief to hear shes back together!!!! Hope everything goes well and is all you were modding for.Talk to you soon....

Let me know how this goes. What are you running for oil/filter at the moment? My oil temps are abnormally high right now (215ish, sometimes 235 if I go high RPM shortly) and the cooler IS hooked up right now. I'm running 10W30 dino oil and a cheap fram filter. I'm hoping when I switch back to synthetic that it drops down.
Oil temps did get up a little higher if I got to higher RPMS but while cruising the interstate it was 215 with the coolant at 185.
I will probably put the factory oil cooler back on next Saturday and change the oil at the same time. Should have @ 100 miles on the engine at that time.
