I am shopping for a 4-post lift. My primary use is for storing a Corvette. There are several manufacturers out there. There is also a relatively wide range of prices. There was a thread on Corvetteforum about a lift that collapsed. Does anyone have any personal experiences with the 4-post lift and would care to make any recommendations, in a positive or negative way.
We have a Backyard buddy and love it. I might be getting a second one for the other side of the garage. I went with the BYB after looking at all the others at shows. It seems to be one of the best built lifts.
The 4 post lifts do not get ancored to the floor. I have a castor kit and can wheel it across the garage.
I have an Eagle. I love it. The car is stored in the Up position all the time, both for security and so the garage can double as a dog house.
The Eagle has the risers inside the columns. Less chance of grease getting on you (or dogs), and less chance of leaves, dirt, sand, etc getting in the grease. Yes, they gotta be well greased.
It was ~$2900 about 4 years ago, they have sales periodically. If you call/write/email them, they'll direct you to someone in your area with one so you can look at it or talk to them.
I would recommend it.
It has the column wheels as an option (with car down, you can wheel it around). Ramps are ~3' long steel; aluminum ramps are optional (I recommend them - the steels are heavy).
I have been flirting with the idea...can I put one in a standard height garage, with my vette on top, and my mustang underneath? The Vette is slammed to the ground, lowered as far as they go, I figure it should give me more roof clearance.
I have one from http://www.liftusa.com. I think it's a Gemini. I love it very much (hehehehehe, not that much). The directions that came with it were the worst piece of junk you could ever imagine!!!!! I even called the tech line to offer some suggestions of improving the pages and they didn't care one bit about it. I have 8' walls on top of 2 coarse of block. I can fit my Integra under the Vette if I run the Vette onto the lift backwards so the roof clears the garage door opener.
I have a Superior model four post lift it works fine for me, The lift that collapsed was one that had hidden locking points and the owner said they had not been engaging entirely since new.

I also have the Autolifters M6. Great quality, built like a tank.
Regardless of the brand you select, MAKE SURE YOU CHECK THE PULLEYS AND CABLE ADJUSTMENTS MONTHLY!!! Every lift will have some cable stretch over time and small adjustments need to be made. If you ever have a problem locking one corner, stop using the lift until adjustments are made!
