need quick 4 +3 help

just drove an 85 with 58k.........4 + 3 tranny OD engages fine but when the OD is not engaged there is whine that increases w/ speed......goes away when you engage OD........is this normal???

This probably isn't going to help, but my '86 4+3 does NOT do that. I wouldn't think there was a change in the 4+3 between these years??

There is a whine when the OD is NOT engaged? I'd have to say that's not normal, as mine doesn't do that either.

I recall reading about a whine only when the OD is off. I'll have to look it up, but I do remember that it wasn't normal and was an indication of somethinig wrong.

This symtom is a sign that the carrier bearing in the OD section is going out. Mine has this problem. I am nursing this along until I can replace the transmission.
