Default Nitrous Relay - Problem and Question

OK, so I was doing some changes to the car the past weekend getting my tach feed to run on the stock ignition rather than off the MSD. I bypassed the WOT switch and was checking the activation of my RPM window switch with no Nitrous flowing and the fuel solenoid disconnected. So I was adjusting the window switch down to activate around 1800 rpm to check it. What my activiation lights were showing was the system was fluttering even with the engine just idling. It would go full arm when I got up to 1800 rpm, but when it returned to idle it would flutter spuratically. I can see my activation light as well as hear the relay behind my dash.

Now my interpretation of this is that my relay has gone bad since I have not changed any other connections that would effect the relay.

Can someone confirm that a relay going bad will react this way? I can plop in another and see, but I will not be home to mess with it for a couple weeks.

Wow I think thats how they inject the nos in stages........they flutter the solenoid...........you can't partally open them............ were both doing it? which msd are you using?

The MSD is not connected.

The relay opens both solenoids. Since the relay was fluttering, then yes both solenoids would be doing it if I had not disconnected the fuel relay. It reminds me of how the relay behind the dash act when they do not have enough power, but I know that is not the case (or seriously unlikely).

My bottle heater relay is installed right next to it so I can use that as a test, just never had one go bad. It has very little use but is about 3 years old.

It also does not do it when the activation switch is turned off. The activation only suplies power to the relay if the WOT switch is flipped and the RPM window switch is within range. I have the FPSS bypassed because I just moved it and have not bethered to wire it back up. The two ground ends are crimped together.

Hmm, maybe the RPM window switch is failing and allowing juice to flow through even when it is not within the RPM range. I have had it for 3 years too.

Another observation is that when I activate the system with the arming switch, the system fires in a flash 8 out of 10 times regardless of RPM.

The more I write the more it points to the RPM window switch as a possible problem. I suppose if swapping the relays and retesting does not fix the problem, then I will get a new window switch from Matt Harlen to replace my Mallory that I really like (since Mallory discontinued it from lack of sales).

By the way I ordered a window switch from harlen on June 23 and am still waiting, his web site says 7 to 10 days.............its been 16 days and I agree it sounds like low voltage and it has to be the window switch.........but then again you have a nos system were you can nail it from idle , then hit the switch at 3000 rpm:hat
