I jacked the rear end of the car off the ground so the suspension is totally relaxed and both wheels spin freely. Laying under the car (like I'm going to bench press the differential), I can easily compress the spring .5 to 1 inches on each end (at the same time). It will also "wiggle" a little in the mounting brackets under the differential.
Should the spring still be compressed when the car is up in the air? I'm presuming the bushings in the mounting bracket are due for a replacement... but anything else I need to be concerned with?
Edit: 1984, with 172,000 miles. But I'd like to know the criterion for "replace it" aside from age, if there are any.
Theyre supposed to last forever, until they delaminate (cracking).
Check for cracks first, the heat from the exhaust does tend to wear on them and cause delaminating eventually. Thats why GM put heat shields on the rear Y.

:iagree: In years on the Forum, I have heard of several instances of delamination, but never of fatigue. They supposedly have been tested through millions of rebound cycles.

I looked at the spring and it seems to be in good shape aesthetically. No peeling or cracking that I can see. But with the Z51 package I would have expected the spring to travel more... I guess I'll just change the bushings and thank my lucky stars it's holding up!
Tony:
I have all kinds of pics and info on the swap- I am planning on making a webpage to detail the swap for Vettes, I just need to get some important academic stuff out of the way first. Hopefully I'll have a nice layout in another 3 weeks or so. And with the exception of a crispy burnt odor flavoring my transmission fluid  I'm REAL happy with the swap.
