What is the best and easiest way to test the aux fan motor. when I first got the car it seemed to work but lately i have not heard or seen it come on. Any thoughts? I searched the archives for this but couldnt find it in any of the posts.
the best and easiest way to test aux fan: take to the dealer! :yesnod: :yesnod:
there is another way: disconnect the aux fan at the plug and attach 12 volts to the two wires leading the the fan motor. polarity is not an issue. the point is, does it come on when the leads are connected. view the result and similuate your opion..
I had an 85 that the primary fan worked, but the secondary fan quit. I reversed the fan relay wires and the primary fan quit, but the secondary fan worked, so I bought a new fan relay and fixed the problem. Turn on the A/C and you will get power to both fan motors.
There are two relays located on the side of the radiator on the drivers side. They are about 1 1/2 inches tall and will have clip on connections. Just unplug the wires and reverse which relay they are plugged into. Don't forget to reverse them back.
thr are two relays for fan control:
1. located left side between rad and power steering res
2. located left side fender just below the master res...this is the main
Aux Fan relay is behind Battery
Main fan relay is on rear of Drivers side wheel well
Aux Fan Switch is bet 6 and 8
I had a bad aux fan relay: replaced and works fine.
Will install 180 fan switch when the beast cools down.
Thanks for all of the input and help. It seems there was a lot of engineering confusion in the early years of the C4. Those were the LSD days of summer I think in the design room. :seeya
Steve,
I didn't realize you had started another thread. I replied to the other one. At any rate, you got it sorted and that's great. Also good info on the location of the Aux Fan Relay on the '85. Makes sense as you have a Burn Off Module in the cockpit and no Burn Off Relay behind the battery, you have room for the Aux Fan Relay.
Interesting info on where your relays are located. I had an 85 and both mine were located on the side of the radiator, the same place they are located on my 94. They must have moved them during the production year. Weird huh??? Glad it was a cheap fix.

That really is interesting, with both relays mounted to the shroud on your '85. I've never seen an '84-'89 that didn't have the main fan relay located here:
Anybody else with an '84-'89 with the fan relays mounted on the shroud?
I’m sure you are correct on the location, Ray. I had an 85 and a 93 at the same time. I must have been thinking about the 93 relay location. The “old” memory gets confused sometimes. I hate getting old. Thanks for clearing up the location deal.
