Ok...I have a GM part number 14079465 which are Snap Rings for a Dana 36 Pot Shafts. What I need is Snap Rings for a Dana 44. I have been unable to locate them except in GM part number 14091399. The problem is that they are a complete kit of parts and cost $300. The first one only costs $32. This is my buddies car and he is desperate. We are gonna try and order the 14079465 and see if that works, but I wanted to give one last chance to the fourm to see if they can solve this mystery. He can't be the only one to ever have this problem.
Re: Part Number Hell: I need help - Rearend (Vvcdde)
I was tempted to chime in earlier, but I didn't have a CLUE as to what a "pot shaft" was. Based on the GM part numbers you have given, it looks like you are looking for the snap rings for the inner end of the output, YOKE SHAFT, also known as the axle shaft. 1985-1991 they are Dana part number, 72404-1X and -2X for the yoke shaft assemblies. These part numbers are "kit" numbers and would contain the desired snap rings. Find a Spicer or Dana distributor in your area. Look in the Yellow Pages, under "truck parts". If you find a partsman with enough compassion, he can look up the components of the "kit". If he doesn't have the breakdown, he can call Dana. His time and effort won't be worth the value of the sale, but if you find a Corvette guy, he may be willing to do the excercise. It is VERY unlikely, he will have the parts in stock. A simpler alternative, would be to take the yoke shaft to either an industrial supply store or a large transmission/rear end rebuilder and match something up. This isn't the precision fit of a rod bearing in a 7000 rpm engine. A generic snap ring should do nicely. Good luck, and...
