Default gear ratio

Hey everyone, I know that there has been a lot of discussion on this but...I am down to the final decision. As you can see from my sig, I have a stock '91 automatic coupe. It has the 2.59 gear. I am deciding between the 3.07 and 3.45, leaning to the 3.45. I am afraid that an upgrade to 3.07 won't be worth the money.

By the way, I am interested in acceleration and not so concerned with taking speed off of the top end. What do you all think? Thanks.

My vote is for the 3.45's. Other than top speed, the greater concern should be cruising rpms. If you spend little time on the interstate, this will be a minor factor. Good luck, and...

RACE ON!!!

That is why I am going with 3.55's. How often do I get the chance to go 150+ anyway?
:steering: :D

As long as you dont mind losing anything you had before after 60mph, go right ahead.

Because youll probably lose some tenths in the 1/4mi.

But I am curious as to why that would happen? Educate us poor unlearned souls! Will he leave the Power Band too soon?

Yes, in an L98, the powerband is too short for alot of gear, it'll be especially obvious with an automatic.

Now if you mod the intake so that you make usable power at high rpms, no reason why you cant change to lower rear.

Hey Vader, you wrote:

Is a mod to the intake a large/expensive project? Also, does that affect the performance of the vehicle any other way? Thanks

Modding the intake is what just about everybody here with an L98 does, it depends on your power goals or ET goals which route you go.

But I dont think more gear is required than a 3.07 in an A4, for an L98 with the TPI intake or even with Superram (Beach Bum changed from 3.07s to 3.54? or 3.45?, and didnt get any ET gains with his SR). Although it would be necessary for Miniram, not enough people have done the Stealth yet so I dont know about that one.
